“I’m really looking forward to getting back to Ireland for the Amgen Irish Open,” Rahm said. “Winning this tournament twice means a lot to me and it’s always a place I enjoy playing. The courses, the fans and the challenge of links golf make it a special week.”

The field was already strong before he signed on. Rory McIlroy headlines. Shane Lowry and Padraig Harrington are in, so is Luke Donald, so is Tyrrell Hatton, who plays alongside Rahm on Legion XIII in LIV. You will not find a better Irish Open field, and the timing isn’t an accident either, with Adare Manor hosting the Ryder Cup a year later.

Why is Rahm free to play at all? Back in May he settled things with the DP World Tour, paying off the fines that piled up after his 2024 jump to LIV and committing to a handful of tour starts this season. Eligibility for the 2027 Ryder Cup was the whole point of that deal. The Genesis Scottish Open was one of the agreed stops. Doonbeg makes two.

He never hid how much he missed this one. Of all the events LIV took off his calendar, the Irish Open was the one he kept bringing up.

There’s more on his autumn schedule too. Wentworth for the BMW PGA Championship, the Spanish Open, the Dunhill Links. Whether he plays all three is another question, because his fourth child is due around then and something may have to give.

Ten DP World Tour titles, age 31, and a LIV future nobody can quite predict. September in Ireland is one thing he’s locked in.

Sergio Garcia will miss the Open Championship for the third time in four years, and this time he’s blaming the pasta.

The 2017 Masters winner shot a solid 4 under 68 in the morning round of Tuesday’s 36-hole final qualifier at West Lancashire Golf Club, only to follow with a 75 in the afternoon. The seven shot difference between rounds left him outside the qualifying spots, and Garcia had a very specific explanation for the collapse.

“I thought maybe have a little pasta and stuff,” he said, “but for some reason it didn’t sit well with me, and I just felt nauseous the whole front nine. In the afternoon, I felt like I was going to vomit pretty much on every hole.”

Garcia said he considered stopping after nine holes of the second round but pushed on hoping for a recovery that never came.

“I thought, let’s play a couple more and see if I can get something going and a miracle happens. But unfortunately, it didn’t happen.”

He has has now played Open final qualifying in three of the past four years without advancing. He did appear at the Open last year through a LIV Golf exemption. Garcia has played in 26 Open Championships in his career and finished runner-up twice, making this run of missed appearances a tough stretch for one of the game’s most experienced major players.

By not qualifying, Sergio Garcia ends his major year with just one appearance in 2026, the Masters, where he finished 52nd. That week was also eventful for the wrong reasons. Garcia smashed a tee box and a cooler stand on the second hole after a wayward tee shot during the final round, earning a code of conduct warning. It followed a similar incident at last year’s Open, where he broke his driver on the same hole.

Looking ahead, Garcia said qualifying pressure would ease if he could climb back into the world’s top 50. “I’m still working hard,” he said. “When I was feeling healthy today, when I was feeling well, I felt pretty good. It’s a shame.”

Qualifiers and Notable Absentees

Matthew Baldwin secured one of the five spots at Dundonald Links in Scotland and will play the Open at Royal Birkdale on his home turf. “I get emotional just thinking about it. It will be incredible,” he said.

Jake McDonald took medalist honors at Dundonald, with amateurs David Howard and Nevill Ruiter, and Army veteran Marcus Plunkett also advancing.

At Royal Cinque Ports, medalist Baard Bjoernevik Skogen was joined by Peter Uihlein, M.J. Daffue, Matthew Southgate, and Antoine Rozner. At Burnham and Berrow, James Nicholas and Caleb Surratt qualified alongside Tom Sloman, Austen Truslow, and amateur Alejandro de Castro Piera.

Uihlein, Nicholas, and Surratt are notable for having also qualified through 36-hole qualifiers for the US Open, making them among a rare group to secure spots in both of golf’s oldest major championships.

At West Lancashire, Sam Bairstow led the qualifiers, joined by Kazuma Kobori, Josele Ballester, Tiger Christensen, and Matthew Jordan, who grabbed the final spot in a playoff.

Among others who failed to qualify were LIV Golf players Thomas Detry and Anirban Lahiri, Thriston Lawrence, 2016 Masters champion Danny Willett, and Florida junior Luke Poulter, son of Ryder Cup stalwart Ian Poulter. YouTube golf personality Wesley Bryan, a former PGA Tour winner, missed the playoff at West Lancashire by a single shot.

Ina Yoon has announced herself on the biggest stage. The 23-year-old South Korean fired a stunning 9-under 63 on Thursday to match the lowest round in KPMG Women’s PGA Championship history and take a two-stroke lead after the opening round at Hazeltine National Golf Club.

Yoon birdied five of her last six holes, taking just 24 putts in a round that left even herself lost for words.

“To be honest, I don’t know,” she said smiling. “I just hit golf ball and it just dropped in the hole and was really an awesome experience.”

A Record-Tying Performance

Ina Yoon’s 63 matched scores previously posted by Nelly Korda in the second round of 2021 and Patty Sheehan in the third round of 1984. Six players have now shot 63 in this championship, with Yoon joining Korda, Sei Young Kim, Kelly Shon, Meg Mallon, and Sheehan on that list.

The round also ranks as the fourth-best opening round at any women’s major since at least 1980, trailing only Hyo Joo Kim’s 61 at the 2014 Evian Championship, Mirim Lee’s 61 at the 2016 Women’s British Open, and Lorena Ochoa’s 62 at the Kraft Nabisco Championship.

Yoon is seeking her first LPGA Tour victory and currently sits 39th in the world rankings. Her mental approach was simple but effective.

“Just try to think nothing. Focus on what I need to do. Focus on process. That part I think I did great today,” she said.

The Story Behind Yoon

Ina Yoon’s journey to this moment has not been straightforward. Four years ago she was suspended by the Korean Golf Association and KLPGA for playing the wrong ball and failing to report it during her national open. The three-year ban was eventually reduced and she returned to the tour in 2024, immediately topping the Korean money list and posting the lowest scoring average of the season.

“Whatever the punishment was as a player, it was my fault at the end of the day, so I took that on,” Yoon told Golfweek.

She joined the LPGA in 2025 and has steadily improved, ranking 29th in strokes gained putting this season after finishing 132nd in her rookie year. Earlier in 2026 she contended at the Chevron Championship, finishing tied fourth.

The Rest of the Leaderboard

Karis Davidson of Australia sits two shots back after a career-best 65, carding eight birdies in a bogey-free round. The 27-year-old, who has made cuts in 15 straight tournaments, is also chasing her first LPGA Tour victory.

“Hit a lot of fairways. Hit a lot of greens. Putting was pretty on today. Really felt like I was going to hole everything,” Davidson said.

Alexa Pano and A Lim Kim are tied for third at 67, with Aline Krauter, Hye-Jin Choi, and Megan Kang a shot further back at 68.

World number one Nelly Korda, chasing history as only the third woman to win the first three majors of a season, opened with a 2-under 70 after a double bogey on the lakeside par-4 16th. Inbee Park in 2013 and Babe Zaharias in 1950 are the only women to have won the first three majors in a single calendar year. Jeeno Thitikul, the world number two, shot a 69.

Shane Lowry has made a change on the bag. The Irishman has split from caddie Darren Reynolds following a missed cut at the US Open at Shinnecock Hills last week and will have former caddie Dermot Byrne on the bag at this week’s Travelers Championship.

Lowry was honest about where his game stands right now. “It’s tough, but golf is just not agreeing with me at the moment,” he said after failing to make the weekend at Shinnecock Hills.

The arrangement with Byrne is confirmed only for the Travelers Championship, with Lowry still figuring out his long-term plans. “We’ll see what the plan is going forward. No idea really,” he said.

Dermot Byrne is no stranger to Shane Lowry. The experienced caddie worked with the Offaly man for the first 10 years of his professional career, a partnership that included victory at the WGC Invitational at Firestone in 2015.

Lowry split from Byrne in 2018 to hire Brian “Bo” Martin, with whom he famously won the 2019 Open Championship at Royal Portrush. The two parted ways in 2023. When reminiscing about that Open win last year, Lowry quipped: “I definitely told him I loved him, not so sure that’s the case anymore.”

Byrne had most recently been working with Leona Maguire until 2024. This week marks Shane Lowry’s third caddie change since 2018.

Lowry has had a difficult 2026 season. His most painful moment came at the Cognizant Classic, where he led with four holes to go before finishing two shots behind winner Nicolas Echavarria.

Other Caddie Changes This Week

Shane Lowry is not the only player heading into the Travelers Championship with a different caddie.

John Ellis, who was on the bag when Wyndham Clark won the 2023 US Open, is filling in for Chris Gotterup this week. Gotterup’s regular caddie Brady Stockton took the week off as his wife is expecting a baby. Ellis had been working with Max Homa, who is not exempt for Signature Events.

Julien Trudeau, formerly with Mackenzie Hughes, starts a new role this week with Canadian rookie Sudarshan Yellamaraju after caddying for Ryder Cowan at last week’s US Open. Travis McAlister, who previously worked for Maverick McNealy and Gordon Sargent, joins the bag of Tom Hoge.

The PGA Tour heads straight from Shinnecock Hills to Connecticut this week for the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands, the final Signature Event of the 2026 season. With a $20 million purse on the line, the winner walks away with $3.6 million, which amounts to 18% of the entire prize pool.

The PGA Tour has now dished out a monumental $160 million across eight Signature Events this season, making this week a fitting finale to one of the most lucrative stretches in tour history.

Rory McIlroy is the notable absentee, skipping the tournament for the third time he has missed a Signature Event in 2026. That leaves World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler as the headline act, looking to add a second win of the season and a second Travelers title having won here in 2024.

Also in the field is US Open champion Wyndham Clark, now ranked World No. 8 after winning two of his last four starts. Cameron Young, Matt Fitzpatrick, and Russell Henley round out the top five in the world rankings, all teeing it up in Connecticut this week. Keegan Bradley returns as defending champion. Jordan Spieth, Tony Finau, and Ben James are playing on sponsor exemptions.

The PGA Tour is getting a major overhaul. The tour announced Tuesday that it has approved a sweeping new competitive structure set to debut in 2028, splitting events into two distinct series and introducing a formal promotion and relegation system for the first time.

The changes were approved by the PGA Tour Policy Board and PGA Tour Enterprises Board during meetings in West Hartford, Connecticut, on Monday, following recommendations from the Future Competition Committee chaired by Tiger Woods.

“The result is a new competitive model grounded in meritocracy, with clearer pathways, higher stakes and more consistency when the best players compete together,” PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp said. “This model positions the PGA Tour for the future.”

The Two Series Explained

The PGA Tour 2028 model centers on two separate tracks running concurrently throughout the season.

The PGA TOUR Championship Series sits at the top, featuring up to 24 events including 16 signature events, The Players Championship, the four major championships, season-ending events, and the Presidents Cup or Ryder Cup. The season runs approximately February through August.

Every Championship Series event will carry a minimum purse of $20 million, with fields of around 120 players, no sponsor exemptions, and 72-hole stroke-play format with a 36-hole cut to the top 65 and ties.

The tour has already identified 10 of its 15 expected Championship Series regular-season events for 2028. The current eight signature events are expected to remain, with new markets under consideration including Boston, Denver, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Seattle, and Washington D.C.

Below that sits the PGA TOUR Challenger Series, the primary pathway to the top track. It will feature at least 20 events with purses of at least $4 million, fields of approximately 144 players, and the same 72-hole format with a 36-hole cut. About seven elevated Challenger Series events will be played during Championship Series off weeks, carrying increased points and consequences.

Promotion, Relegation and Pathways

The PGA Tour 2028 structure introduces a clear promotion and relegation system. At least the top 90 finishers in the Championship Series points standings will retain their status for the following season. A minimum of 20 players from the Challenger Series will earn promotion each year. Winning two Challenger Series events in the same season earns immediate promotion, as does winning a major championship.

Players who fall short of retaining Championship Series status will have a final opportunity through a “last chance” series of four to six events played in the fall. Those who still fail to regain their status will compete in the Challenger Series the following season.

Q-School will continue to provide developmental pathways into the broader tour ecosystem.

The Postseason Gets a Shake-Up

The Tour Championship will move away from its permanent home at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta after 2027 and rotate to prestigious venues, including courses the PGA Tour has never played before, such as Pine Valley Golf Club in New Jersey, Cypress Point Club in California, and Seminole Golf Club in Florida. The revamped postseason will also introduce match play.

Tiger Woods’ Role

Tiger Woods, chairman of the Future Competition Committee, played a central role in driving the changes alongside Patrick Cantlay, Maverick McNealy, Keith Mitchell, Adam Scott, and Camilo Villegas, as well as strategic business advisors Joe Gorder, John Henry, and Theo Epstein.

“This work was bigger than any one player or person,” Woods said. “It was about designing the strongest possible version of the PGA Tour for the future generations of fans and players.”
